Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Zooms Into View

sonic the hedgehog 2

One of the most anticipated moments of tonight’s Game Awards was the promised release of the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 trailer, and thankfully, they produced it within the first half-hour so we could just turn off the rest of the show. As the logo promised, two tails can be seen quite frequently within these 2 1/2 minutes, attached to a flying fox that, at least in this movie, Sonic is meeting for the first time.

One of the best things about the cinematic variant of the Sonic universe has turned out to be Jim Carrey as Robotnik-slash-Eggman. He’s not anything like the character from the game, but he manages to put his own crazy spin on it that works. When we last saw Robotnik he was plotting to escape the desolate world he had been abruptly ring-ported to. Seems it didn’t take him long, because he made a friend over there…some red guy with spiked knuckles. Heard of him?

Of course, Knuckles should know better than to trust Robotnik, for we all know what the mad doctor is REALLY after….the immense emerald of power the echidna has been appointed to guard. Once he pits Knuckles against Sonic as a distraction, Eggman figures it’ll be an easy path to the powers of Chaos, and by Chaos we DON’T mean those little blue things you can raise as virtual pets in Sonic Adventure.

Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic, while Colleen O’Shaughnessey is performing Tails — she is also the voice of Tails in the games, and it’s nice to see Sega not recasting for the sake of star power (at least for this one character). Idris Elba is voicing Knuckles and humans James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Natasha Rothwell return alongside Carrey.

And for those of you let down by no sign of Shadow or Big The Cat, wait for Sonic’s third movie…or the post-credits scene at the end of this one, probably. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 speeds into theaters April 8, 2022.
