Sonic The Hedgehog 2 as a movie was something that many people weren’t sure would happen after the first movie stumbled in terms of its first reveal. If you recall, the first movie was set for a 2019 release and then they revealed the model for Sonic The Hedgehog and fans went ballistic. For good reasons mind you. They delayed the movie so they could fix Sonic and the result was the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.
Fast forward (gotta go fast!) two years and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is here and is aiming to crank everything up to 11. It’s brought in Tails, Knuckles, Eggman and his robots, and more, and according to critics (the ones that matter, anyway), things are a lot bigger and better this go around. But of course, that just is one side of the story, the other side is the box office revenue.
On that front, the movie made over $26 million dollars on Friday, which is darn impressive. So projections for the movie have it coming in at about $67-69 million domestically. For some context, the original movie did $58 million in its opening weekend. So this is a nice jump, plus, we don’t know the worldwide numbers just yet. Either way though, if that holds up (and it could go up for the record) that is a good “set of rings” for the speedy hedgehog.
This also solidifies Paramount’s decision to not just greenlight a third movie, but to give Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) a spinoff series for their Paramount+ platform. Of course, there are some questions going forward, including what happens with Jim Carrey in lieu of his retirement announcement, but he may come back, we don’t know.
All in all though, this just goes to show what can happen when you put GOOD work into making a GOOD video game adaptaion.
