One of the most well regarded of the “3D” Sonic games is getting a remaster. “Sonic Generations” came out in 2011 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, and was innovative at the time for allowing you to alternate between “Classic Sonic” (in the 2D levels) and “Modern Sonic” (in the 3D levels).

At the “Sony State of Play” presentation on Thursday, SEGA revealed they were bringing back “Sonic Generations” with enhanced visuals, for the Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, the Nintendo Switch, and on PC, but there’s more! The title of the revived game is now “Sonic X Shadow Generations”, and the game will feature an all-new story campaign focusing on Shadow, in a plot involving time travel mechanics and visiting locations from previous Sonic games, along with the return of “Black Doom” from the “Shadow the Hedgehog” game.

Sonic’s back to outrace that truck all over again.

Some of us just wanted to relive racing away from the GUN Military truck in the classic “City Escape” level, but a whole new adventure with Shadow added on? It’s a good time to be a Sonic fan.

Takashi Iizuka, the head of the “Sonic Team” production studio for SEGA, released the following statement on the Playstation Blog: “With Sonic x Shadow Generations, we wanted to bring Sonic Generations to PS5 and PS4 while pairing a brand-new Shadow storyline to crossover with the original story.

With Shadow’s portion of the title, players will get to know him more as a character and understand his motivations. It will create the ultimate celebration of Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and Shadow gameplay that all fans will surely enjoy.”

Here’s the trailer:

To help contribute to the “Shadow” festivities, SEGA will also release a free “Shadow” costume for Sonic in “Sonic Superstars” (the Sonic game released last year) on February 15th, for all platforms.

With Shadow playing a prominent part in the 3rd Sonic movie coming to theaters this December, SEGA appears to setting the stage for a year of ‘”Shadow” themed events. Look for “Sonice X Shadow Generations” to be released this Fall.
