Shenmue I and II Coming August 21 For Consoles And PC

shenmue I and II

Now that Shenmue 3 is on the horizon, wouldn’t it be nice to catch up on the series before the trilogy is completed? Where are Shenmue I and II? They’re on the way and coming back to stores VERY soon.

Ask any seasoned gamer and they’ll tell you Shenmue I and II are some of the finest gaming experiences ever made. Yet until now, they’ve been shackled to dead consoles (Shenmue was released for Dreamcast, while Shenmue II came out for the first XBox). In addition to a widescreen view, the Shenmues now boast these improvements:

• Choice of Japanese or English speech in both games
• Saves can be carried over from Shenmue into Shenmue II on all platforms
• Saving anywhere in both games
• HD resolution rendering
• Updated UI
• New post processing effects for both games
• Full controller support and configurable mouse and keyboard for PC users
• Full Achievement support for both games on all platforms

One thing Sega wasn’t able to change was the framerate, which remains at 30fps. The company explained that this was impossible to change: “throughout the engine, game code and scripts there are hard coded assumptions about a fixed 30Hz frame update rate.” Upping the rate to 60fps would require an overhaul of the entire game’s coding. It’s not happening.

Sega says cleaning up these two games for a modern-day rerelease was a “herculean effort,” so it might not have happened without the guarantee of Shenmue 3. Be grateful to all those who supported that game’s Kickstarter campaign. Shenmue I and II will be out for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC August 21.
