Shenmue 3 Delayed Into November 2019

Ready for Shenmue 3 this August? Turn off that forklift engine…it got delayed again. How long is the wait this time?

Not too much longer…the release window is still within 2019. Yu Suzuki sent out a message to crowdfunding backers of the game this morning:

Whilst almost ready, the game simply needs a little more refinement before being truly finished. We feel that the extra time we have will help us deliver the true Shenmue experience players around the world deserve! We thank you for your patience and understanding.

While we might be slightly irritated by this delay, we can respect Suzuki for using words like “Whilst.”

The original Shenmue was an early entry in the sandbox genre that was the crown jewel of the Dreamcast lineup (and also the most expensive game Sega had ever produced at the time). A sequel was planned for release on the same console before Sega exited the hardware business. Shenmue II was still released on the Dreamcast in Europe, but Americans only got it on the original XBox.

The JRPG audience on the XBox was greatly overestimated, and it seemed unlikely there would ever be a Shenmue 3 until 2015, when Suzuki announced Sega and the production team Deep Silver would make it if they could raise two million dollars in one month. The Kickstarter went miles beyond that, raking in $7,179,510 as its final total.

The first real trailer for Shenmue 3 was released last March (see below). The game itself will now be out November 19, 2019.
