Was the Shazam! film always this comedic? Or was it changed after the Justice League reaction?
The DCEU (as it’s known by many) has been a very different kind of superhero universe. It’s been very dark and gripping in tone, and not everyone has liked that despite the massive amounts of money they’ve made (with Aquaman making a billion dollars despite being just above 60% on Rotten Tomatoes). The next film is Shazam! which is decidedly lighter in tone that Batman V Superman, Justice League, Suicide Squad and Man of Steel. But according to director David Sandberg, it was always going to be that way:
“I mean, it’s such a separate film that I don’t think it changed anything really,” he said to Heroic Hollywood. “It’s very different from Justice League. It’s still the same universe, but just has a very different tone.”
The film has been under scrutiny because of the Zachary Levi casting as “Earth’s Mightiest Mortal”, his suit, which to some fans looks “padded”, and the very comedic tone which many feel is a ripoff of the MCU. Those who know the character though (especially the recent reboot in the comics) knows that this honestly is how the character acts.
We’ll have to see how it does when the movie arrives April 5th.
