Today we got another look at The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf, the anime movie coming to Netflix next month. It focuses not on Geralt, the Witcher we’re used to following, but Vesimir, Geralt’s former mentor from back in the past. Geralt has nothing to do with this movie — this is a solo Vesimir tale.
Watching Vesimir swagger his way through the kingdom in this trailer, you can see the influence he had on Geralt, for better or worse: he doesn’t care for much other than the thrill of the hunt. He doesn’t even mind the fact that the villagers fear him; their terror equals many bags of coins once they hire him to get rid of something they fear even more.
One curious thing about these trailers is that there have been two now and we haven’t seen the werewolf at the center of the plot yet, beyond a wanted poster that appears briefly. We get Vesimir fighting an army of the undead and a bat-dragon thing, but no werewolf. Maybe that’s being saved for Trailer #3.
Studio MIR, the same animation studio behind The Legend Of Korra and Netflix’s Voltron reboot, created the visuals here and they look darn good. Theo James voices Vesimir, and he was not only involved with Castlevania, he played Vesimir already in a flashback sequence from the live-action Witcher series. The movie also features the voices of Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Tetra, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit) as Deglan and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) as Lady Zerbst.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will be directed by Han Kwang II from a script written by Beau de Mayo. Both de Mayo and Kwang also serve as the producers, alongside Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, whose name you might recognize as the showrunner of the live-action series.
Nightmare of the Wolf will be streamable on Netflix August 23. It’ll be followed by the long-awaited premiere of the live-action show’s second season, on December 17.
