SDCC 2018: Boruto Comes To Toonami September 25

What’s coming next on Toonami? The answer came this weekend at Comic-Con when Boruto: Naruto Next Generations was announced as the Adult Swim block’s most recent acquirement. How does it continue the Naruto story?

The character of Boruto was introduced in a feature film released in Japan in 2015. He is Naruto’s son — it’s set a generation after the original Naruto series and Boruto faces different challenges than his now-famous father did. A manga adaption of the movie started running in Shonen Jump soon afterward…then it grew into an ongoing storyline, which the new Boruto anime adapts.

With the acquirement of Boruto, Toonami has a dilemma on their hands. Fitting this show in the schedule leaves two choices, both of which will anger a section of their viewers. Either they air Boruto and Shippuden at the same time, annoying people who think that’s too much Leaf Village for one block….or they suspend Shippuden well before it finishes its run, angering the viewers who followed that show. What would YOU do?

It’s a tough call, but if I were DeMarco, I would ax Shippuden — for the reason that Boruto makes it clear where the original cast of Naruto winds up. If you already know the end of the story, why finish it?

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations begins its run on Toonami September 25. It’s unknown at this time where it will be placed on the schedule.
