SDCC 2017: The Simpsons Will Resume On DVD This December

the simpsons

Remember when the DVD rack at the store stretched as far as the eye could see? Remember when it seemed like we were guaranteed to continue receiving sets of Simpsons seasons until the end of time? History didn’t work out that way, but today Fox announced a second chance for the iconic series.

The Simpsons was one of the initial shows that led the wave of TV-to-DVD sets in the early 2000’s. With some of the best television the 90’s had to offer, scores of bonus features, and a commentary on EVERY episode (occasionally two), you got what you paid for and then some. But as the TV-to-DVD market peaked and declined, and all the Golden Age episodes were finally released, sales of Simpsons sets slowed. The last official release was Season 17 in 2014, though there was a “20th Anniversary” Blu-Ray set before then that published the 20th season plainly with no special features.

The day Fox retired the Simpsons sets was a bad sign for the DVD market as a whole. It hasn’t really bounced back since then, but who would really complain about this? More Simpsons on DVD is a good thing, period.

The Simpsons: The Complete Eighteenth Season will be released to DVD December 5, once again featuring a commentary on every episode, plus tons more. Fox’s press release follows.
