SDCC 2017: Captain Marvel Will Be Set In The 1990’s

Chronologically, which Marvel Studios movie would you assume is the first? Most people would say “Iron Man,” but they’d be wrong. The earliest Marvel story to date is the yet-unreleased Captain Marvel…and why? Because it takes place in the 90’s, well before Tony Stark suited up or the Avengers battled an alien invasion.

Kevin Feige revealed this factoid during the Marvel SDCC conference this afternoon. As for any possible reason for the time shift, Feige kept quiet. He did reveal this, however: the enemies Captain Marvel will be battling in her titular movie will be the Skrulls. That’s not the name of an alternative grunge band, but a race of shapeshifting aliens with sinister intentions. Nick Fury will also appear in the movie, and this being the past, he’ll have the use of both of his eyes.

Feige revealed some information about other Marvel movies yet to shoot. Ant-Man and The Wasp, the sequel to Ant-Man, will feature Hope Van Dyne as the latter superheroine — but Hope wasn’t the first Wasp. That title belongs to her mother, Janet Van Dyne…and Feige confirmed she’d be played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

While he was there onstage, Feige also named off some other members of the Ant-Man cast: Laurence Fishburne as Giant Man, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, and Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch.

Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and The Wasp are early enough in development that no footage exists for either of them. However Feige did share some concept paintings of the former film. You can see them up top and below, courtesy of Adam Lavac’s Twitter account.
