Star vs. the Forces of Evil

Star vs. the Forces of EvilAfter the huge reception at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con as well as stellar viewing ratings, Star vs. The Forces of Evil got its very own panel at this year’s con in a room about 3 times the size as last year’s room, with twice as many guests from the show. The panel was headed by series creator Daron Nefcy, who was accompanied by the voice of Star, Eden Sher; the voice of Marco, Adam McArthur; creative director Dominic Bisignano; and supervising director Aaron Hammersley. Ms. Nefcy again said she was floored and amazed by the response to the trailer’s debut at Comic-Con 2 years ago as well as all the cosplayers she saw at last year’s and this year’s panel. She thanked the attendees with several clips from season 2 along with a live reading of a clip by Ms. Sher and Mr. McArthur as Star and Marco.

Ms. Nefcy, along with Dominic Bisignano and Aaron Hammersley, said that the making and writing of all the little bits and segments for Star is really a team effort. For instance, Britta’s Tacos, the name of the taco place in Star vs. Echo Creek, is named after a member of the production team (since all the other clever taco place names the team had come up with were real taco places, so they couldn’t use those names in the show). Another clip from an upcoming episode shows us Marco’s morning grooming routine in the bathroom. The idea of Marco actually counting the number of swipes of deodorant he puts under his arm was actually the routine a crew member did as a kid. Ms. Nefcy says everyone on the team adds a bit of themselves into every episode.

Star vs. the Forces of EvilAs far as season 2, Ms. Nefcy, Mr. Bisignano, and Mr. Hammersley say it will be a much darker season, as already seen by the episodes about Ludo, “Ludo in the Wild” and “Wand to Wand.” Season 2 will also have 22 episodes, almost twice as many as Season 1 (which had 13 episodes), and Ponyhead, Star’s best friend, will return. The team also hinted at the very slight possibility, maybe, of Star and Marco getting together in a non-platonic way. They know many fans would love to see the two hook up, but so far, there have just been the slightest of hints there might be more going on in their relationship besides friendship. The big news though was that Disney XD already renewed Star for season 3, which they were currently working on!

Besides the animated series itself, Star vs. The Forces of Evil will also be making its debut in print form this fall with a new comic series of original stories from Joe Books, as well as a book which will read like Star’s diary. The team promises the new book will also include Marco’s famous taco recipe which is a real recipe from one of the staff members.

Because of the response from last year’s panel, Nefcy held a surprise cosplay contest for everyone who came to the panel dressed as a character from the show (all photos below from Daron Nefcy’s blog).

Winners won original drawings done by Nefcy as chosen by the 5 panelists.

Afterward came the audience Q&A.

I’m the one cut off in the far left of the photo. There were many questions from whether Star would get the missing piece of her wand, what do Star’s parents think about Marco, and if Marco would earn his black belt despite just getting his red belt in the episode “Red Belt.” Sadly, most of the questions asked were answered by, “Wait for it in season 2.” As far as Marco getting a black belt though, McArthur guessed it might be a more arduous trek for Marco if his sensei is missing that videotape as well. From last year’s panel though, we do know that McArthur himself has 3 black belts, so Marco definitely has the potential to get one himself. I was in queue for questions myself and wanted to ask whether the Mewni origins of Miss Heinous from St. Olga’s Reform School for Wayward Princesses would eventually be revealed. Unfortunately, time ran out before I could ask my question, but I was able to ask it at the signing session later to Nefcy. I was also given the “maybe” answer for season 2 or 3. I guess we’ll all just have to see in the upcoming weeks and next season.
