SDCC 2016: DreamWorks Offers Musical “Trolls” Trip

DreamWorks Animation needs a hit badly. Is “Trolls” that hit? Too early to tell. For Comic-Con, the ailing studio has released a minute and a half of footage from their upcoming movie based on those ugly things kids used to collect in the 90’s. These trolls don’t look ugly, however. The animation style is what you would get if some of the background characters from Adventure Time episodes were rendered in 3D.

This magenta one is Princess Poppy, played and sung by Anna Kendrick. She knows a few ancient easy-listening tunes, which she plays to the delight of the flora and fauna around her.

In addition to Kendrick, the cast also includes what is mostly musicians: Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop and Gwen Stefani. It’s safe to assume this film will involve lots of singing. But will it be pre-packaged material from out of the 70’s or will we hear something new?

We shall find out when “Trolls” opens in theaters November 4.
