Everyone loves the wild cult classic movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but it was made in 2010 while the graphic novel series it was based on was still being completed. As a result, it’s less faithful to the source material than it could have been — but there’s a solution on the way.
For the past two years, Netflix and Science Saru have been collaborating on an eight-episode anime miniseries adapting the entirety of the S.P. books — it’s called Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and it hits the streamer in the middle of next month.
Scott Pilgrim himself is a self-centered slacker who would love more than anything to date the delivery woman he just met (in the movie Ramona Flowers works for Amazon; on the show she delivers Netflix DVDs). But taking Ramona out also means taking out (in a different sense) the seven other people she dated before him, all of whom are evil and out to kill him. But that’s just life in Canada.
Based on everything we’ve seen thus far, we see no indication Scott Pilgrim Takes Off won’t rock. The full theme song and title sequence was revealed today; it’s performed by the Japanese rock band Necry Talkie and enhanced by Science Saru’s electrifying animations. Can you spot the reference to Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad?
In addition, the cartoon stars EVERYONE from the movie, including the people you’d think they couldn’t afford today. The full list includes Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Johnny Simmons as Young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Mae Whitman as Roxie and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.
It all can’t get here soon enough. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off debuts on Netflix November 17.
