Sailor Moon Eternal Comes To Netflix June 3

Most people who know next to nothing about anime will still recognize a tall blonde in a sailor outfit with gigantic pigtails as Sailor Moon. She is one of THE most iconic Japanese characters in the entire world, which is why it might surprise you how infrequently her material has been legitimately sold in the US. Rights issues meant Usagi and the Sailor Scouts could not be reprinted for years — she was shut out of the 2000s, when manga truly blew up in the US. Go figure.

It was not until the mid-2010s that Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was able to be reprinted for the first time in its original form. This was also around the time a new anime adaption of the series started running: Sailor Moon Crystal. Her comeback was strong, but wouldn’t reach the big screen until very recently. Now Netflix has announced it holds the rights to the new movies and will be making them available very soon.

Yes, we said mo-VEES, plural. The Scouts are making up for lost time by dumping two features on you at once, and they’re taking a page from the Avengers by telling one story in two halves. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie Part 1 and Part 2 are an adaption of the Dream arc of the manga, chronologically taking place after the storyline told in Sailor Moon Crystal.

After spending some time apart, the Scouts have reunited to take on a new threat…the Dead Moon Circus, sinister acrobats from space who are infesting the world with nightmares in an effort to obtain the legendary Silver Crystal. Well, they can’t have it!

The movies were directed by Chiaki Kon (‘The Way of the Househusband’, ‘Nodame Cantabile: Paris Edition & Finale’), with music by Yasuharu Takanashi (the other recent Sailor Moon cartoons). TOEI and Studio DEEN split the duties on animation. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie Part 1 and Part 2 will premiere on Netflix June 3.
