The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has gone to some very interesting places in the last decade. For example, in the comics, there was not one, but three crossovers with DC Comics via Batman, which led to a very popular animated movie. They also crossed over with the Power Rangers in the comics. On TV, there was the 2012 series that many people consider one of the best TMNT series ever made. And then…came Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This series had a VERY different take on the turtles and their band of friends and thoughts are very much…divided on what the series quality is like. It’s clear that this was made for kids versus longtime members of the TMNT family, but there are some things in there that are truly old-school turtles. There’s honestly a bit of confusion as to what is coming for the franchise as many feel it’s canceled after the upcoming episodes are done. But before then, the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, is coming to Netflix. And a synopsis for it has been put out online:
RISE OF THE TMNT: THE MOVIE
When a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning, Leo is forced to rise & lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, & Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species…the Krang! Coming to @netflix in 2021 @Nickelodeon

The Krang are obviously a MAJOR player in the TMNT universe, and were a major focus of the 2012 series, which might have been why they were held back for the Rise of the TMNT series until this movie. A really good question here is who is the “mysterious stranger” from the future that warns them about the Krang? Also, will this be a one-off for the Krang? Or are they going to bring them back if the series continues?
Nickelodeon and Netflix have had a very good relationship in the past, including bringing for the Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus movie. So perhaps they’re aiming to hit a wide audience with this movie as well.
