It has been fifteen years since the initial season of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt hit streaming and it seemed like the franchise would always be a one and done affair despite the (probably intended as a joke) cliffhanger it ended on. Although Americans stereotype the country’s own animation output as saccharine and childish, the Japanese have their own stereotype about American animation being filthy and crude, with South Park and Rick and Morty being examples of American cartoons that have a Japanese following. Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt draws on stereotypes of American animation, with an artstyle more similar to Craig McKraken than the stereotypical anime artstyle. The titular characters are fallen angels who fight monsters based on body fluids. Yes, it’s that kind of show. Americans had lots of fun with just how over the top filthy and hilarious the anime was. Does season 2 capture the zeitgeist as well as the legendary first season?
Unfortunately, season two was significantly more under the radar than season one because it streamed on Amazon Prime with little to no fanfare. The legendary dub cast of season one was entirely replaced and Jamie Marchi’s (voice of Panty and English dub script writer) English script was completely missing as well as the iconic obscene catchphrase the series is famous for. The new cast does well with what they are given, as Stocking’s new dub voice is industry veteran Cristina Valenzuela. Being on Amazon Prime was also a death sentence for it being able to find as much of an audience as it would have on Netflix or Crunchyroll as Amazon Prime doesn’t promote their anime. Despite the voice changes and the lack of exposure, those who did see the second season viewed it as a very worthy follow up.
The big cliffhanger from last season gets resolved fairly
anticlimactically, with the gags being the main drive. Like season 1, season 2 does shorter story segments, a staple of American animation storytelling. This time around, there are some episodes with three 7 minute segments instead of two 11 minute segments, giving these episodes less breathing room to develop the humor. This was one problem with season 2, but there’s lots to like with season 2 too. The rude and crude humor is basically the same here, but some episodes have especially memorable and creative gags. The episode where Panty is physically unable to speak swear words, so she has to sing them instead is an especially memorable sequence. The Jack Kirby comic parody episode and its artstyle was another highlight. Another segment that was memorable was a spoof of Italian giallo films. The highs of season 2 were just as high as season one’s. Despite the highs, there were some unfunny clunkers, so this was a very up and down uneven season, but the best parts make it worth watching.
One complaint I do have is this season could just be called The Panty Show as Stocking and Garterbelt get way less to do this season than the previous season. New characters introduced are a pair of boy band-esque angels who serve as foils to Panty and Stocking, but they don’t get much to do in season 2. Stocking got the short end of the stick this season.
If you liked season 1, you will love season 2. I’m usually not big on the adult comedy genre of animation unless it’s done in a particularly creative manner, but this season was definitely creative as was season 1. Next to Dan Da Dan season 2, New Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is probably my vote for second best anime of summer 2025. For adult comedy animation fans, even those not normally into anime, this season is worth it.
