When the boxart was leaked for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl earlier this month, fans feared they now knew every character in the lineup. Perhaps not so. Two more characters were revealed today, but the circumstances are a bit different. As the box promised, Ren and Stimpy are in the game….but they’re taking up just one slot. That leaves at least one extra for whoever you’re hoping for!

Like the Ice Climbers or Banjo-Kazooie in the Smash Bros series, you control Ren and Stimpy as one character. “They are separate characters with distinct personalities, but they are also inseparable which is why they play as a single, joint character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl,” says Joel Hystrom, product manager at developer Ludosity. “We really wanted them to be a duo. It allows for some very special moves and playstyles, so we thought it’d be interesting to explore.”

Ren and Stimpy mainly attack by attacking each other. Their Light attack involves Ren slapping Stimpy repeatedly, for as many times as you can press the button, and the domino effect will damage your opponent. The cat and chihuahua can summon a Log (from Blammo!) to roll into opponents as a special move, or jump into a convertible for a Charge attack, and their Strong Up Air move mimics animation from the Happy Happy Joy Joy song.

Issues with its abusive creator aside, The Ren And Stimpy Show was a groundbreaking series whose influence can still be felt in cartoons produced to this day. It was the first series in a long time to be written by storyboard, and it purposely did not use a stock set of expressions for its characters, so every deranged face Ren made was a different one. That’s kind of a hard thing to recreate with 3D polygons, but Ludosity managed to come as close as possible.

The other two revealed characters from the box art were Aang and Korra, but we doubt you will be able to control them at the same time. (They weren’t even ALIVE at the same time.) Along with Ren and Stimpy they join a list that includes Spongebob, Sandy Cheeks, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, April O’Neil, Catdog, Nigel Thornberry, Invader Zim and eight known others.

More news about Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will be posted as we get closer to its release date.
