Focus Features’ Ratchet & Clank, based on the Sony PlayStation video game franchise, sold a disappointing $4.8 million (estimated) in tickets in its premiere weekend, placing it #7 in the box office race for the weekend behind two other movies opening in wide release (Keanu and Mother’s Day), nearly an order of magnitude behind the ongoing box office champion (Disney’s live-action/CGI remake of The Jungle Book, which earned an estimated $43.7 million in ticket sales to top the box office for the third week in a row), and even finishing behind Disney’s Zootopia, which earned $5.3 million in its 9th week of release.
Movies have survived disappointing opening weekends before. Ratchet & Clank could yet show a reasonable profit, especially if it takes off overseas.
