In the era of renting anime videocassettes from Blockbuster, Ranma 1/2 and Magic Knight Rayearth were two of the hottest titles there were. It has been a long while since both titles’ heyday, but it appears that they are about to be revived for a new generation of fans.

The Japanese X account for the Ranma 1/2 anime has revealed that there will be a new anime and that more information about said revival will occur on July 17. Here is the promotional video announcing the new anime:

Ranma 1/2 was a slapstick comedy classic created by Inuyasha mangaka Rumiko Takahashi about a boy named Ranma who changed genders when splashed with water and dealt with romance and martial arts wackiness. The original classic anime that aired in Japan from 1989-1992 is streaming right now on Tubi for free.

Like the Ranma 1/2 reveal, the new Magic Knight Rayearth announcement solely revealed that a new anime will happen. Unfortunately, there is no information about when follow up announcements will be made. Here is the promotional video for that new project:

Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the first anime of the isekai subgenre involving the protagonists being transported to a fantasy world. It was also created by legendary magical girl mangaka group CLAMP, creators of Cardcaptor Sakura. The original Magic Knight Rayearth anime that aired in Japan from 1994-1995 is streaming right now for free on Tubi, Crackle, and Plex.

Aside from the existence of these shows, a lot is shrouded in mystery. Are these continuations or reboots? Which anime studio is animating these? Will any of the original seiyuu reprise any roles in the revival? Will any dub voice actors return? Those questions are still unanswered. At the very least fans of these classics will be very interested in the news to come and these revivals should spark curiosity about what made the originals so beloved.
