Presenting Elio, Inside Out 2, And Other Disney Movies You Didn’t Know Are About To Exist

It’s D23, the day Disney just DUMPS every single thing they have planned for the next year in one massive pile and forces us to sort it all out. Any one of these movies would generate an entire 300-word article on their own, but their individual times to shine will have to wait for later. For now, we have a lot to get through, so…prepare for the dump:

INSIDE OUT 2: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger are back, along with a now-teenage Riley. Amy Poehler will return as Joy, but they’re reportedly have some trouble bringing Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling back (come on, Mindy, what else have you been doing lately?) Back when Inside Out 1 came out, I joke-predicted there would be an Inside Out 3 where Riley is an old woman and her inner emotions have to prepare for death. It would be the darkest, saddest Pixar movie of them all (and that’s saying a lot). It’s more possible now than it was yesterday! Inside Out 2 will be released in the summer of 2024.

This November, prepare to enter a STRANGE WORLD in Disney Animation’s next feature. It’s an “intergalactic adventure that follows a dysfunctional family as they attempt to explore hostile alien planets.” Disney hasn’t had much luck with animated sci-fi movies, Lightyear being the latest to underperform. Maybe this can break their run of bad luck? Strange World will be released November 23.

More animated sci-fi: Iwájú, a heavily accented title for a collaboration between Disney Animation and pan-African animation studio Kugali. We don’t know much about it other than it takes place in a “futuristic version of Lagos, Nigeria.” This one’ll be a Disney+ exclusive and will debut in 2023.

Even MORE animated sci-fi (wow, they’re really betting on this): Elio, the story of a young boy who feels like he isn’t appreciated and doesn’t belong anywhere. Then KABOOM, he’s instantly teleported to a planet on another galaxy and celebrated as Earth’s ambassador! Now he has too MUCH attention! Look for this one Spring 2024.

Finally, a never-before-revealed Disney Animation project simply called WISH. Wishing upon a star is synonymous with this company, but someone’s about to wish she didn’t do it. The star has a mind of its own and it’s crashed onto Earth to bug her! This project is supposed to use a new animation technique that combines the look of watercolors with CG. Should be interesting,

Remember two decades ago when a ton of animated sci-fi movies came out at once and all bombed (Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Titan AE)? It’s happening again. Those movies eventually found an audience, but way past too late, and it’s taken until now for the Mouse to have enough confidence to roll the dice on space and robots again. So if you like animated sci-fi, it’s now or never to prove to Disney you’ll pay for it.
