Pixar’s Latest Moves Onward To Digital

Pixar’s Onward will go down in history for having the shortest theatrical run of any movie in their library, at just two weeks. But it’s through no fault of its own; the world just kind of….blew up. So what now?

Similar to the fate it bestowed upon Frozen 2, Disney will be expediting Onward’s release to digital platforms. It will go on sale for digital download this very night at 5 PM Pacific / 8 PM Eastern, and will be streamable on Disney+ two weeks from now, April 3.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” say the film’s director, Dan Scanlon, and producer Kori Rae. No word on what’ll happen to that Maggie Simpson short, but like The Longest Daycare it could be folded into an upcoming episode.

Onward takes place in a magical world that’s lost its magic. Two purple elves, Ian and Barley, discover their dad was a wizard and knew the spells that everyone has long forgotten. He’s dead, but prior to passing, he concocted a spell that would resurrect him for one day just so he could see his kids. Ian isn’t nearly as magically inclined as his father and botches the spell, then has 24 hours to get it right or he’ll lose his one chance to meet Pop.

The next theatrical animated movie is Trolls: World Tour, and if you can believe it, it’s STILL scheduled to come out on April 10 even though every major theater chain will still have closed doors. Maybe it’s a “let’s just get this crummy thing out of here” kind of deal. At any rate Dreamworks will be offering Trolls: World Tour on demand the same day it goes to the big screen…if any out there are in operation.
