I suppose we don’t have to complain about Pixar relying too heavily on sequels anymore. Post-Toy Story 4, everything they’ve announced has been 100% original, and that goes for their next project, Luca, revealed today.

Luca is the name of a small boy who lives in a quaint little village along the Italian Riviera. One lazy summer day, he befriends a mysterious new kid and introduces him to the hottest gelato shops in town. Luca and the unnamed boy are having a blast, but what Luca doesn’t know is that his friend is hiding a secret…he’s actually a sea monster.

How will Luca discover this fact? Eugene Levy with a garden hose? We don’t know much beyond the basic plot description and the painting Pixar shared today. To get a teaser trailer we’ll probably have to wait until Soul is released, whenever that happens.

Luca is being produced by Andrea Warren, who was previously involved with Cars 3 and the Lava short before Inside Out. The film’s director is Enrico Casarosa, who boarded for Ratatouille and was previously responsible for the Pixar short La Luna which ran before Brave.

“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship,” says Casarosa. “Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca. So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

If humanity manages to conquer this virus by the summer of 2021, we will certainly feel like Luca does in that painting. Should capture the mood nicely. The movie is currently set for a June 18, 2021 release.
