Pete Docter Talks “Inside Out” at Annecy 2014

Disney Pixar Inside Out

Variety covers an advance screening of Inside Out, the upcoming Pixar animated feature film directed by Pete Docter that will bring audiences into the mind of a young girl through personifications of her major emotions. The screening and remarks by Docter reveal many more details about the film that have been publicly available until now. Docter stated that there are intense personal sources for the elements of the movie, dealing with his feelings watching his daughter Elie (now 12) growing up and turning into a teenager. He also dealt with some scientific underpinnings for the movie, citing studies by expert Robert Plutchik that defined 8 primary human emotions that were whittled down to 5 for the movie (Fear (voiced by Bill Hader), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Joy (Amy Poehler), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Anger (Lewis Black)). Docter also detailed how the few screenings of elements from the movie are already changing the way some people process and handle their emotions, telling a story of a boy who overcame his fear of the diving board after seeing the movie, and subsequently described his feelings in terms of the movie’s characters.

Inside Out is scheduled for release on June 19, 2015.
