If you’re thinking of getting into the Critical Role series, it’s too late. The famous D&D liveplay sessions have been going on for years, through three entire campaigns, and are too densely packed in their own mythos to allow for dropping in midway. And you can’t start from the beginning unless you have a LOT of free time — the first adventure alone, Vox Machina, spans over 400 hours. If only there was something out there that could condense it into easily digestible episodic bites, so you could find out what all the fuss was about and still have time to live your life. Good news…it’s coming soon!
The Legend Of Vox Machina, an animated adaption of the first story, was first proposed in a Kickstarter campaign — a massively successful one. All they asked for was cash to make a pilot, and ended up generating enough for an entire season. Then Amazon stepped in and picked up the show, ordering a second season to make for at least 24 guaranteed episodes.
And now we’re close enough to the launch of Legend Of Vox Machina that we can see what completed animation looks like. The main title was revealed today:
All the participants of the original game, who were cartoon voice actors already, are present in the cast as their own characters: Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. Here they are at NYCC, performing a live read with another completed scene spliced in for comparison:
Phil Bourassa (Young Justice) designed the animated look of the Vox Machina crew. Titmouse is handling the animation and Brandon Auman (Star Wars: Resistance) and Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse) serve as executive producers. Look for The Legend Of Vox Machina to hack and slash its way onto Amazon Prime February 4, 2022.
