What were the dual announcements Viz Media made during NYCC this weekend? What can we expect from them over the next year, in addition to what we already knew?
First off, Viz made an early announcement for the upcoming The Art Of Neon Genesis Evangelion: 2007-2017, set to hit stores in the summer of 2019. No images or page scans from the artbook have been revealed at this time, but you can expect “movie art, concept art, collaborations with mobile video games, fashion spreads, dozens of illustrations from NEON GENESIS EVANGELION character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and much, much more.”
As far as new acquisitions go, Viz revealed they now hold the US distribution rights to the shojo manga Daytime Shooting Star, which was turned into a live-action film in Japan. The film isn’t on the way, but the manga is…it’s coming Summer 2019.
Viz will also be the company bringing Netflix’s Castlevania anime to disc! The first season of the series will be released December 4 on DVD and Blu-Ray. Behind-the-scenes storyboards and art galleries are included on both formats as special features, while the Blu-Ray will contain an exclusive animatic.
Something we find odd is the fact that this set only covers the first season (which is a mere four episodes long) when the second season will be out by the time of its release. It could have something to do with Netflix withholding any home video release of the most recent season until a certain amount of time has passed, which has been the case for all their other DVD and Blu releases.
