Adventure Time is considered the modern-day flagship series of Cartoon Network. It revived the channel from a tailspin of Canadian imports and live-action reality shows and became one of the most successful animated shows of the decade. Finn and Jake heads can still be seen in every promotional graphic the network uses. Despite all this, it feels like it’s been months since an episode was last aired on the channel. In fact, it’s not just a feeling….we really haven’t had a new episode of Adventure Time since “The Comet” aired on June 6, and reruns since then have been sparse.
That’s about to change, if the Adventure Time panel at NYCC is any indication. Not only is Season 7 about to debut in one month (November 2nd to be specific), but just two weeks after that, the long-anticipated Adventure Time miniseries will make its debut. Much of the panel was about that miniseries, and it was revealed to be all about Marceline the Vampire Queen, specifically her long history.
The episodes about Marceline’s past have ranked among the most popular and beloved episodes among fans, not just for their humor but their deep heart and pathos. “Stakes” was revealed as the miniseries’ title — it’ll be eight episodes in length and will cover Marceline’s life story.
The previous episodes about Marceline’s tragic past were heavily influenced by Rebecca Sugar, who left the show after “Simon and Marcy” to create her own series, Steven Universe. Surely that must be keeping her busy, so the question is, can a miniseries about Marceline’s story really work without her? Maybe it doesn’t have to. Sugar will guest-star in the opening episode as Marcy’s mother, and even sing a song. Whether Sugar had any involvement beyond that wasn’t revealed in the panel.
In other Adventure Time news, Fionna and Cake will return once more (of course) and a new holiday special this December will revolve around BMO. The staff said they were now plotting out Season Eight, and one of the ideas being thrown around is the possible introduction of Finn’s mom — but that is at least a year away.
It sounds like a great season ahead, and I hope the marketing department sells it big. If anyone from CN is reading….when the miniseries is ready to launch, please do not promote it like this:
