Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy PosterThe biggest news at the Marvel Animation panel at New York Comic Con 2014 was that a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series is in production, and will be joining the current lineup of Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. on Disney XD. Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb made the announcement at the very end of the panel, after screening the “Guardians of the Galaxy” episode of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. and a one-minute test animation reel (starring Rocket and Star-Lord, set in a richly detailed cityscape – embedded above; click the poster at left for the pre-production art that Disney has released). Loeb was careful to say that the test animation the New York Comic Con audience saw was not final, and provided no other information about the series or when it will begin airing.

The remaininder of the panel was taken up by a screening of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” episode of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Clips were shown from upcoming episodes of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors as well. The clip from Marvel’s Avengers Assemble featured the Winter Soldier battling Captain America and the Red Skull, while the Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors clips showed Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Girl in the parallel universes of the show.
