I think I can say with confidence that Nintendo is the greatest video game company in the history of the world. Most game companies — most companies period — have a Golden Age followed by years of mediocrity and chasing past glory. In Japan alone, Sega has never recovered from its Saturn era, Squaresoft was never the same after becoming Square Enix, and Konami has turned into vampires — but Nintendo remains what it always has been, turning out high-quality games for over thirty years straight.

But it’s not all roses here. Nintendo also happens to be one of the most baffling and inscrutable companies in the world, and their decisions rarely make any sense. They are also made in secret and rarely explained. They regularly pass on obvious money-making opportunities while ignoring the requests of screaming fans too eager to give that money to them — behavior that would drive a smaller company into ruin.

So regarding the animated Super Mario Bros movie — which was first announced back in February of 2018 — it was entirely possible the film could be abandoned and Nintendo would just never inform us of that fact. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it and Illumination can’t say anything because of NDA. Fortunately Nintendo of Japan president Shuntaro Furukawa CAN say something and the website Fast Company managed to rope him in for a rare Western Hemisphere interview.

The interview is mostly about where Nintendo’s at in the present, and their Universal Studios park (which recently had to close again), but the subject of that Mario movie is brought up and Furukawa confirms it’s still on. In fact, it’s still on track to be released in 2022, and you’d think if it’s next year we would have seen something by now….a teaser, even a piece of artwork — but like I said, Nintendo is extremely secretive.

The most eye-opening remark is his implication that more than one movie could be in development. “Animation, in general, is something that we are looking into, and not just this franchise,” Furukawa says. Hmm.
