When it comes to the publishers of consoles, the monthly sales numbers are very important for various reasons. Not the least of which it shows who is buying their consoles and whether certain game releases are boosting those numbers in one form or another. The July NPD numbers have come out and not too surprisingly, the Nintendo Switch has once again come out on top, furthering its domination of the year 2020 in sales both software and hardware.
In terms of games, Nintendo didn’t do too bad, however, its newest title, Paper Mario The Origami King, only managed to get the #3 spot on the charts in July. It lost to the other new release in Ghost of Tsushima, as well as Call of Duty Modern Warfare. The overall sales of the game are a bit unknown, but reports claim that it has had the biggest launch in the US in the franchises history, so we’ll have to see how that all plays out. More than likely it’ll hit the one-million mark eventually. But only time will tell. Also, Animal Crossing New Horizons was at No.5 in July in the United States, which isn’t too surprising as the game has been dominating in many respects since its launch in February.
Saying that the Nintendo Switch is dominating 2020 isn’t too much of a stretch. But of course the holiday season is where things are going to get interesting. In terms of the Switch, we still don’t know what’s coming out to be the big “holiday seller” during November or December, as Nintendo has been VERY quiet on the software front as of late.
And then, of course, there is the release of the Xbox Series X and the PS5 which are slated to arrive this holiday season as well. So will those hurt the overall Switch sales? We’ll have to wait and see.
