To say that 2020 has been an “interesting year” would be the understatement of the millennium. To be frank, almost every single month so far has brought some kind of dysfunction and chaos into the world in one form or another. From the rise of Covid-19, to the lockdown sweeping the world because of it, the arrival of “Murder Hornets” in certain countries, and of course, the recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd by police officers that have caused riots and protests throughout the world. 2020…has not been a good year. But in light of all these events, groups like Nintendo have stepped forward to call out the evils and injustices that have been present.

On Twitter, the beloved video game company made the following statement:

Then, not too long after, the Pokemon Company added their own statement to the list:

On the surface, you might think that this is “opportunistic”, but it’s far from that. No one would expect major video game companies like Nintendo or Pokemon to respond like this because of their media outlet. So for them to step up and support the Black Lives Matter movement is something altogether rather special.

And to be clear, they are hardly the first companies to do so in the video game industry. Sony and CD Projekt Red have delayed events that were supposed to be held this week in order to show solidarity in the events of George Floyd’s death. Other companies have stood up and made statements as well, and even certain video game websites took a day of silence to show their support.

And lest we forget, at The Game Awards last year, Geoff Keighley brought together the heads of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to show unity in trying to make gaming a safe and happy place to be.

So in truth, they’re just doing what they promised. Now it’s up to us to live up to their example.
