nickelodeon all-star brawl

Once the final DLC character is revealed for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, that’ll be it for Smash news until sometime after Switch 2 comes out. Someone’s gotta pick up the slack, and publisher GameMill just volunteered with the announcement of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

The game is being developed as we speak by Ludosity and Fair Play Labs, and if the trailer is any indication, it will play a lot like Smash — four popular characters enter an arena themed around one of them, and they rack up damage points until three shoot away off-camera and one is left. If any singular company has the IP library to take on Nintendo, it’s Nickelodeon, with thirty years’ worth of Nicktoons to pull from. These are the ones we know of:

  • Michelangelo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Leonardo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Nigel Thornberry (The Wild Thornberrys)
  • Powdered Toast Man (Ren & Stimpy)
  • SpongeBob SquarePants (SpongeBob SquarePants)
  • Sandy Cheeks (SpongeBob SquarePants)
  • Patrick Star (SpongeBob SquarePants)
  • Oblina (Aaahh!!! Real Monsters)
  • Lucy Loud (The Loud House)
  • Lincoln Loud (The Loud House)
  • Helga (Hey Arnold!)
  • Reptar (Rugrats)
  • Zim (Invader Zim)
  • Danny Phantom (Danny Phantom)

Other than that, Nick and GameMill are holding their cards close to the chest for now — and releasing temp box art that casts the roster in shadow. This has resulted in a lot of speculation and micro-analyzing of each silhouette for familiar shapes. The most common guesses are Aang, Korra, Ren, Stimpy and CatDog. We expect at least one Avatar-related character to be playable as one of the released screenshots depicts a stage from A:TLA.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will feature twenty arenas to battle in, from Spongebob’s Jellyfish Fields to the Technodrome from TMNT, to wherever the weird neon-glowing area is from the Zim stage. Also, unlike Smash, you’ll be able to unlock new moves for your characters through gameplay — GameMill has yet to announce how this will work.

Who would you like to see in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl? Shelby Woo? Stick Stickly? Ebenezer T. Squint from Pinwheel? Make your wish list now and start hoping. The game will be released this fall for Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch, XBox One and XBox Series S/X.
