New Scooby Doo Movie Coming To Theaters, This One Animated

scooby doo

Forget all about that embarrassing live-action half-parody that called itself Scooby Doo back in 2002. This time they’re going to do it right.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed this morning that the Scooby Gang is returning to theaters in an animated feature. Dan Povenmire, co-creator of Phineas and Ferb, will executive produce the new film. Tony Cervone will direct, an animation veteran who has directed several Scooby movies that went to video.

There are a couple of people involved who were also involved in the live-action films, but they are producers, not directors or writers: Charles Roven and Richard Suckle. Also producing is Allison Abbate, who has on her resume The Iron Giant, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, and marrying Mr. Cervone.

“Like countless fans, I have always loved the Hanna-Barbera cast of characters,” said WB’s president of creative development, Greg Silverman. “As one of their most famous brand ambassadors, Scooby-Doo will take the lead in re-introducing this pantheon of enduringly popular animated stars on a grand scale with an exciting new movie.”

If the movie is a success, Warner Bros. hopes that they’re able to bring back other characters from the Hanna-Barbera stable in a similar fashion. The animated Scooby Doo movie is scheduled to hit theaters September 21, 2018. As for the question of whether this will be 2-D or 3-D animation, the report doesn’t specify which….but given the way the market currently works, 2-D is highly unlikely.
