The first Space Jam was a perfect storm of multiple things. Michael Jordan had just come back into the NBA after an 18-month hiatus that he used to go play baseball. After coming back his popularity was arguably through the roof, and as such, an idea was born to have him do a basketball game with the Looney Tunes via a film. The film mixed live-action and cartoons in a way only a few films had done before and this one arguably did it the best. The film was a hit and while it’s still debated about “how good it is” it has a diehard fanbase that loves it.
Which makes it all the more curious that Space Jam A New Legacy is being made. Headed up by the current best basketball player in the world, Lebron James. The film is being touted by Lebron as “not a sequel”, and in an episode of Road Trippin, he delved even deeper into the film’s plot and how it differs from the first film.
According to him, the biggest thing is that this isn’t just a film about basketball. It’s as he calls it a “parenting movie between me and my son”. According to Lebron the film will focus on him trying to “teach him” to play basketball “his way” and then when things go wrong he’s going to go and have to rebuild trust with his son.
He does promise a basketball game though and one that will feature a rival team that’s “out of this world”. However, he firmly notes that it won’t be the Monstars they’re playing against.
THe film is apparently close to being down but there are some reshoots that’ll be going on soon to help finish things off. Due to the pandemic situation in theaters, Space Jam A New Legacy will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. Which in this case will be July 16th, 2021.
