If reports are correct, Netflix started filming Season 2 of their surprisingly excellent live-action adaption of One Piece earlier this month. No shots of the sets exist, but we do know a little more about who is playing who.

Four actors were announced by the Netflix One Piece Twitter account this week to be playing key characters in the storyline for the second season. The biggest one is Captain Smoker, to be portrayed by Callum Kerr. I’d explain what he’s known for but it’s kinda obvious. 4Kids, who forbade depictions of tobacco on their shows, had their hands full with Smoker. Since they couldn’t alter his giant cigars into lollipops, they simply painted them out…which meant smoke was coming from the Captain’s mouth at all times with no explanation.

Julia Rehwald has been cast as Captain Smoker’s sidekick Tashigi. Ty Keogh has been cast as Dalton. Rob Collletti (School of Rock: The Musical) will play Wapol, a role many people assumed was going to Danny DeVito (maybe Danny can still show up as someone else, who knows).

Seven other cast members were already announced for Season 2 earlier: Werner Coetser as Dorry, Brendan Murray as Brogy, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, Clive Russell as Crocus, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, and Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9.

These eleven join the regular cast which includes Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji. And we haven’t even gotten to everybody yet. To say One Piece has a big cast of characters is like saying the galaxy is somewhat large.

Two casting mysteries still loom over the production: chief among them the question of Jamie Lee Curtis being in this show or not. Showrunner Matt Owens said last October he was “writing for her” when coming up with the scripts for Doctor Kureha, the character she’s rumored to play. Curtis is also a big One Piece fan and has publicly expressed desire to play Kureha. All that doesn’t necessarily mean she IS Kureha right now though.

The other mystery is how the show is going to do Tony Chopper, the main cast member that will be introduced to the crew in Season 2 — and happens to be a small talking reindeer who can change his shape at will. Chopper is by far the most “cartoon” member of the Straw Hats and would have to be 100% CGI. And who’s playing him?

One Piece Season 2 is currently targeted for a 2025 release date on Netflix.
