In Cars 1, Lightning McQueen learned there’s more to life than winning races. In Cars 3, McQueen decides “screw that, I’m old and I gotta show up this punk young upstart.”
This is now the fourth released trailer for Cars 3, and the tone has not lightened in any way. This is another dire trailer where you barely see the cars’ faces and the music is more in tune with a Fast and Furious film (Has anyone seen Mater yet? Maybe he’s dead). We get the same disturbing shot of Lightning shedding parts as he wheezes through the air in slow motion, but this time it’s at night.
But what this trailer reveals that the others didn’t is just how much an advantage Lightning’s fresh young rival, Jackson Storm, really has over him. It turns out cars evolve much faster than organic forms of life do — like within one generation fast. You wondered why all the cars older than Lightning from Movie 1 looked like they came out of the 1960’s…this is why.
Jackson is simply better in every way. His shape gets less wind resistance and his engine is more efficient. It makes one wonder how far it could go if we could see into the future. In a hundred years, will Cars Land be full of flying nuclear-powered autos that read each other’s thoughts telepathically?
Cars 3 races into theaters June 16.
