Netflix to Stream Live Action “Parasyte” Adaptation “Parasyte: The Grey” Starting April 5th

Netflix has recently broken the infamous live action anime adaptation curse. Both the adaptations of One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho have high critical and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It looks like Netflix is going to have a third go round with live action anime adaptations, this time based on the horror manga/anime series Parasyte.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Parasyte is about alien creatures that possess human bodies and eat the human bodies they don’t possess. The protagonist, Shinichi, somehow becomes bonded to one of the parasitic beings without losing his own autonomy. He ends up calling mutated right hand “Migi” (or righty in English) and uses his mutated alien hand to fight the parasitic body snatchers. The series is known for intense action action scenes and gruesome body horror and is not for the feint of heart, but also became somewhat of a cult favorite from it’s time airing on Toonami in 2015/2016.

There’s not a trailer for the live-action version, but for those with strong stomachs, here is a brief trailer for the Blu-Ray collection of the original anime (released back in 2016):

Whereas the Netflix live action One Piece was an American production and the live action Yu Yu Hakusho was a Japanese production, this adaptation, entitled Parasyte: the Grey, will be a Korean production. The series streams worldwide April 5th and in a rare move for Netflix – which is famous for releasing entire seasons on release date – they will release episodes weekly until June. Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun have been casted as the leads in this production. Yeon Sang-ho (Director of acclaimed zombie film “Train to Busan”) will direct and co-write the series with Ryu Yong-jae.

Unlike the previous Netflix live action anime adaptations, this series will be a much more dramatic reimagining with a different set of characters than the original. Actress Jeon So-nee will play protagonist Jeong Su-in. This series will also feature an organization not in the original series called The Grey, which hunts down Parastyes. Considering the title, The Grey will assuredly be a major feature of this incarnation. This new incarnation will definitely be something different from the original and it will be interesting to see how fans respond to this version.

Look for the live action “Parasyte: The Grey” on April 5th.
