Netflix Sonic The Hedgehog Series Confirmed As Sonic Prime

Last December, Netflix admitted for a few minutes that a Sonic The Hedgehog series was in development for their service, but quickly took the message back. Today was the day they finally admitted it. Groundhog Day is Hedgehog Day!

They not only confirmed the series, but revealed its title and logo. From now on we’re referring to it as Sonic Prime. What does that mean? No one knows yet. But perhaps there’s a hint in the official description: “The 24-episode animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the ‘Blue Blur’ of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.”

It’s the word “multiverse” that’s causing the most speculation. Multiverses are trendy these days for bringing back old characters and reuniting others. Sonic has had more shows at this point than any other video game character by far, going back to 1993 when two of them premiered at once. Could this show’s new premise be an excuse to bring back characters from SatAM, Adventures of Sonic, Sonic Underground, Sonic X and Sonic Boom?

Some of those guys we want to see more than others (the Freedom Fighters most definitely, Christopher Thorndyke not very much). But if they do appear, it’ll be in CG…the style of animation is one of the few facts we can confirm at this time.

Man of Action, the creative collective most famous for Ben 10, will be running the show while Wildbrain, the animation studio who’s handled Carmen Sandiego and the new Snoopy Show for Apple, will be making Sonic speed along. It’ll be at least a year, though, before we see the fruits of their labor…Sonic Prime isn’t due out until 2022.
