Minions The Rise of Gru Getting Reverse Review-Bombed

When it comes to the Despicable Me franchise, there are many who would agree that it went far and above what many thought it would do. The first teaser for the first movie didn’t even showcase the movie’s main character of Gru or the Minions. But after people saw it, they realized that this was a rather unique thing. So naturally, sequels were made, and then a spinoff/prequel starring the now beloved Minions. And that brings us to Minions The Rise of Gru, the fifth movie in the franchise and the one that shows how the Minions met Gru and tried to take over the world with him.

According to box office predictions, the movie is set to make over $100 million in its first three days, and about $129 total when you count the 4th of July, setting a record as a result. But there’s another thing that’s going on here that is surprising to some. Mainly, the movie is getting reverse review-bombed.

What do we mean by that? Well, there are some online who are asking fans of the movie to go onto places like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and then give it a 5/5 or 10/10, even if that’s not how they personally felt about the movie.

The “intent” is to alter the audience score so that it reads higher than it naturally would. Typically, a “review bomb” happens to a movie that fans are passionate…about hating, and thus they give it 1-star or 0-star reviews to make it “clear” that the fans aren’t happy with what occurred.

So having a reverse review bomb happen with Minions The Rise of Gru is arguably something…well…unexpected. To the extent that it would be hard to fully describe just how odd it truly is. And at present, on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is around 90%.
