Mel Gibson Will Be Recast in ‘Chicken Run’ Sequel

Via TheWrap, Mel Gibson will not be reprising his role for the Chicken Run sequel and will be recast with another actor.  It’s still unclear whether or not any of the other original cast will or will not return, but Gibson is definitely not returning according to 2 sources working on the production.  The same week the Chicken Run sequel was announced, Gibson made headlines with comments by Winona Ryder in an interview with The Sunday Times where Ryder recalls Gibson making homophobic and anti-Semitic comments to her back in 1995.  Gibson, through his representative, denies Ryder’s accusations.

According to Variety though, the decision to recast Gibson wasn’t because of any of his past actions.  Aardman Animation had told Gibson’s team long before Ryder’s story broke that Gibson wouldn’t be asked back because the storyline for the sequel would revolve around younger chickens, so they would need younger voice actors for the film.  This probably means the rest of the original cast won’t be asked back as well if the story is a prequel of sorts or if it involves a whole new cast of chickens.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how the story pans out.
