Around ten years ago, the weirdest thing happened: the nation’s animation studios developed a fixation with deconstructing the villain trope. Illumination’s Despicable Me, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph and Dreamworks’ Megamind were all released within months of each other, each one a variation on the theme “what if you told the story from the villain’s perspective?”

They all approached the subject a bit differently. Ralph was not a true villain, just a sort-of actor who played one in his game, and yearned to be a hero instead. Gru started out bad, but reformed after becoming a family man. It was Megamind that went the hardest, answering the question of what, exactly, the villain would do if he actually WON the fight against good.

When these three villains faced off against each other, who won? In financial terms, there is no question Gru came out the victor, though he had a lot of help from his screaming Minions. Ralph came in a close second, becoming one of the few Disney characters to get his own theatrical sequel. Megamind, however, was never seen again…until today.

Dreamworks announces the return of Metro City’s most feared menace in Megamind’s Guide To Defending Your City, coming to Peacock. The animated series will take place after the events of the film, meaning Megamind now has to learn how to be a superhero instead. Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, who wrote the original Megamind, are overseeing the project along with Eric Fogel.

The synopsis has this curious sentence: “He’ll be bringing the audience along for the ride, as Megamind’s trusty brainbots will be recording everything, making him the world’s first superhero influencer.” What does this mean — that the series will be shot like a found footage movie? Or does it mean kids can pull up some kind of interactive website to play along with the show?

Dreamworks also announced an animated series continuation of their movie Abominable, which may be the single most forgotten movie they have in the library. I’m still hoping someday they do something with Miguel, Tulio and Chel again….come on, guys, if Abominable can get something…
