Disenchanted with Netflix’s recent purge of quality cartoons like Futurama and American Dad? Good news, everyone — Matt Groening himself is now on the Netflix payroll. Wondering what he’s thinking up? Today we found out.

In 2016 the news broke that Netflix was working with Groening to create a new animated series. Eighteen months of development time later, the streaming channel has finally revealed Disenchantment, a cartoon that promises to do for fantasy epics what Futurama did for sci-fi.

The press release describes the show taking place in “the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson, Broad City), her feisty elf companion Elfo (Nat Faxon), and her personal demon Luci (Eric Andre). Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.”

“[Disenchantment is] about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you,” says Groening.

The series will star a who’s who of voice-acting greats, many longstanding veterans of Groening cartoons: John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding and Lucy Montgomery. Animation will be handled by Rough Draft, the same studio that animated Futurama.

The first season of Disenchantment will be 20 episodes long, but it’ll be split up into two pieces Voltron-style. It’ll make its debut with ten episodes sometime in 2018.
