It’s been 17 years since Matt Groening introduced anything new to his resume. Some fans have wondered if The Simpsons and Futurama were all he would ever make before retiring to a rocking chair on a porch. Today Groening said NO WAY to that presumption by revealing he has finally begun work on his third animated series. Deadline broke the story.

I guess you can’t blame him after the treatment Futurama got in its initial run, but Matt Groening will not be shopping this show around to the Fox network. Instead he’s developing it with Netflix, which currently allows a large amount of creative freedom and will guarantee creators an entire season at least. Netflix has been building its animated stable slowly over the past three years, successfully establishing the cult hit Bojack Horseman. They introduced six episodes of a new adult cartoon, F Is For Family, last fall, and now they’ll get to work with Groening.

This news was brought to our attention by Charles Brubaker, author of Ask A Cat.
