If you’ve never tuned into Marvel’s What If… cartoon on Disney+, whether due to “superhero fatigue” or some other reason, nothing will cure you of that fatigue quicker. It’s a well-done and engaging series, mixing up elements of the MCU to create entirely new and interesting situations. Captain Peggy Carter was just the beginning.
This time all sorts of things are going to happen: Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop will team up as cowboys in the Wild West. Agatha Harkness, fresh off the finale of her own series, will show up and possibly sing (again?) Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck will be doing SOMETHING together (we don’t know what, but it should be good). Hulk, Red Guardian, Moon Knight, White Vision, several of the GotG and many others are confirmed to be involved as well. And in a riff on Voltron, several heroes will get their own mech suits that combine into one gigantic battle bot.
Perhaps the coolest shot of the trailer is Storm wielding Mjolnir and declaring herself Goddess of Thunder, in the voice of Alison Sealy-Smith (the same Storm from the original X-Men cartoon and X-Men 97). If you’re Storm, you almost don’t need the hammer, but WITH it, whoo.
Some people complained last time that What If… amounts to the kind of random stories a couple of kids might come up with their action figures. We say: and there’s something wrong with that? Let the imagination fly.
Sadly, it looks like this will definitely be the last season for What If…, the trailer states this plainly. We anticipate it will go out with a real bang, though (for our money, the finale of Season 2 is better than Avengers: Endgame). Seems the other Watchers are displeased with this one, probably due to his interference back in Season One. Will there be a multidimensional effort to save him?
All eight episodes of Marvel’s What If… Season 3 will premiere on Disney+ December 22.
