Disney just held its Marvel Animation panel at Comic-Con and revealed a lot about what we’re getting in the next two or so years. Let’s break it down.

First off: the hotly anticipated X-Men 97, the continuation of the beloved 1990s X-Men cartoon, has been given a release window of Fall 2023. No information beyond that was revealed, making this the shortest of today’s news bites, but we wanted it up front.

Second: Marvel’s What If… not only has a second season coming our way, it was just renewed for a third. The second season has been given a release window of Early 2023. In that season, we’ll see the further adventures of Captain Carter and HYDRA Stomper Steve Rogers, as well as alternate stories for Shang-Chi, Scarlet Witch (maker her good again, please) and the Thor characters. AC Bradley will remain the show’s head writer for the foreseeable future (and the Watcher can see pretty far). A trailer for the second season was shown at the Marvel Animation panel, but it has yet to be posted online. We’ll update this page if and when it comes out.

What If… also has a spinoff coming our way: Marvel Zombies, an expansion of the zombie apocalypse episode. The panel claimed it would be the goriest Marvel cartoon ever, and we have no reason to doubt that claim. No release date for this one yet.

Further out in the future, Marvel is working on Spider-Man: Freshman Year, a series following the young Peter Parker alongside, believe it or not, Charlie Cox as Daredevil (no, this is not the return of Daredevil we were promised; he’ll be in a live-action show too). There will be at least two seasons of the series, and the second will be named Sophomore Year. It won’t be until 2024 that this is completed.

Finally, on the cuter side of things, a fluffy five-short series called I Am Groot is the next Marvel Animation project to be released on Disney+. It will use the Baby Groot version of the character and all five shorts will be released August 10.
