In 2021, famed video game director Amy Hennig announced she was taking on a project relating to the Marvel superheroes, but didn’t share much more than that. Three years later, we now know that project is Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and that it’s nearly done — a 2025 release date was attached to the reveal trailer.
It’s the middle of World War II, and Captain America and Black Panther have teamed up to infiltrate Nazi-occupied France on a mission to stop Hydra’s titular rise. Cap is Steve Rogers, but due to the timeline BP isn’t T-Challa — that guy hasn’t been born yet; you play as his grandfather Azzuri.
Players will control four characters over the full game. In addition to Cap and Black Panther, two new people invented for the game will also be part of the mission: Gabriel Jones, a US soldier and member of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali, a Wakandan spy. The voice cast features Drew Moerlein as Captain America, Khary Payton as Azzuri, Megalyn Echikunwoke as Nanali and Marque Richardson as Gabriel Jones, plus Lyne Renée as a yet-to-be-seen ally named Julie and and Joel Johnstone as Howard Stark.
One thing that hasn’t been revealed is just what kind of game Marvel 1943 IS — these days, you can’t be too sure it’s not another half-hearted “game as a service” trend chaser. The words “narrative driven” in the description seem to suggest this is not the case, as live service games tend to be just about matchups with little thought to the story. At the least, hiring Amy Hennig and not utilizing her storytelling chops would be a huge waste.
We also have no idea what platforms the game is being developed for — PS5 and XBox would be easy guesses but there’s no confirmation. We should learn more about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra as its release window gets closer.
