Mandalorian Producer Prepares For Season 3, Open To Possibility Of A Movie

It’s looking like we won’t truly know what to expect from Season 2 of The Mandalorian until it starts appearing on Disney+. The season premiere episode drops in just two weeks now, and they still haven’t officially revealed any of the guest stars or confirmed any of the rumors. All we DO have is this little mini-trailer that was dropped by the show’s official Twitter account two days ago:

Some of those scenes are still from Season One! We’re sick of regurgitating months-old speculation about Ahsoka, so this time let’s focus on the future. According to executive producer and showrunner Jon Favreau in an interview with Variety, they’ll be ready to start filming Season 3 before the end of the year. That would put the timetable in line with Season 2, which was filmed in the winter months of late 2019/early 2020.

Some people have fretted about whether or not it’s safe to go ahead. If it was any other show, I might be worried, but…very few scenes in Season One required characters to be less than six feet from each other; Space Westerns about loner bounty hunters have a built-in distance policy. Also, the main character is wearing a face covering 24-7 and his sidekick isn’t a human being. They’ll be fine.

Favreau also says he’s got the storyline plotted all the way to Season Four (Disney hasn’t confirmed a Season Four, but the numbers would have to really drop for that not to happen). He’s also open to the idea of a Mandalorian feature film, but such a thing is not currently being planned. “W’re definitely open to it,”  he says, “and excited to see where the story leads us and have that flexibility — because there’s no rulebook now.”

As for Season 2, don’t count on learning everything about The Child / Baby Yoda right away. Favreau stated earlier this year Season 2 would mostly be about setting the stage for some bigger revelations that are coming in the seasons afterward.

The second season of The Mandalorian begins on Disney+ October 30.
