Loren Bouchard has cemented his position as one of the all-time great prime-time cartoon creators by giving us both Home Movies and Bob’s Burgers. Now, after a brief detour to make AppleTV+ musicals, he’s returned to create a second animated show for Fox: The Great North.
The very first teaser for the series aired last Sunday during Animation Domination, and if you thought the character designs looked a bit familiar, well…that’s why. It’s not like Duncanville where the designs purposely mimic the Groening style to avoid trying anything new. They have no chins because the Bob’s Burgers guys are actually behind this.
Parks and Rec’s Nick Offerman stars as Beef Tobin, father to four children: Wolf (played by Clone High’s Will Forte), Ham (voiced by Paul Rust), Moon (played by Aparna Nancherla) and Judy (voiced by Jenny Slate). Rounding out the lineup are Wolf’s fiancee Honeybee (played by Dulce Sloan), Judy’s boss Alyson (voiced by the ubiquitous Megan Mullally), and….Alanis Morissette, who is playing herself.
Yes, she’s Canadian, and Alaska is not part of Canada, but…she’s not actually there. Alanis is Judy’s imaginary friend, because you can go kinda crazy way up there. As far as staff is concerned, The Great North is co-created, written and executive produced by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, and Adventure Time’s Minty Lewis.
Bouchard has managed to keep Bob’s Burgers feeling fresh and funny after eleven seasons, a quality streak even The Simpsons couldn’t match. The four seasons of Home Movies retain a devoted fanbase, and AppleTV’s Central Park received good reviews, though not quite as glowing as Bob’s Burgers. We have confidence in this one, and so does Fox — the network has already ordered a second season before the first even got a chance to air. The Great North launches in February on Animation Domination.
