Lightyear Will Be Pixar’s First Theatrical Film In Two Years

Buzz Lightyear Movie

Pixar fans were seeing red when Turning Red was revealed to be yet another Disney+ premiere. People began to wonder if this was going to be Disney’s new policy for some reason and if Pixar was considered “second-tier” now, unworthy of the big screen. Well, that’s all nonsense: according to the latest trailer for Lightyear, the movie will play EXCLUSIVELY in theaters this summer.

We should note that the previous trailer did not specify where Lightyear would end up, suggesting Disney may have been thinking this one over for a while.

The new trailer (which for some reason Disney put on Twitter instead of YouTube) premiered during the Oscars last night, but was buried in the news by, um, other events. It shares a lot of the same scenes with the previous trailer, but does reveal a new thing or two: like, for example, the fact that Buzz and his crew aren’t on a distant planet by choice. The opening scenes take place after “a full year of being marooned” there and having to fight off carnivorous vine attacks.

No, the biggest question still hasn’t been answered, that of “what exactly is going on here.” Pixar heavily implied in the first two movies that Buzz Lightyear was the main character of a popular cartoon show…in fact Disney literally made the show in 2000 (not that you can find it on Disney+ anywhere; just take our word for it). Has that been changed so that the toy Buzz is based on….whoever this is, in whatever reality he is?

Lightyear stars Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Chris Evans as the space jockey himself. It was directed by Angus MacLane, and it will take off in theaters (and beyond) June 17, 2022.
