Shinichiro Watanabe, the creator of anime classics Cowboy BebopSamurai Champloo, and Space Dandy is set to have his latest anime series come out in 2025 and now we have a release month to look forward to. His latest series, Lazarus, will be a thirteen episode series, and unlike many of his previous works, it will feature serialized rather than episodic storytelling. It will come out in April in both Japan and the US.

This series is another Toonami original, but unlike most Toonami originals, it will also broadcast in Japan. This is a major deal as the creators in Japan have faith that the Japanese market would be interested in this series, whereas most of the Toonami originals either don’t get released in Japan or get dumped on streaming months after the US premiere with little fanfare. That and the fact that Watanabe and acclaimed studio MAPPA are teaming up should make for a theoretically winning combination.

Official synopsis for Lazarus:

“The year is 2052.

The world has entered an era of unprecedented peace and stability, largely due to Hapna, a drug developed by neuroscientist Dr. Skinner. Hapna spread throughout the world as a ‘miracle drug’ with no side effects and freed mankind from pain. However, its developer, Skinner, suddenly disappear and no one knew where he had gone.

–Three years later, he reappears as a demon who leads the world to ruin.

Hapna was a trap, a drug that causes death after three years of use. “Thirty days left. If you can find my place by then, humanity will survive.” The only way to save the world is to use the only vaccine Skinner has.

Lazarus, a team of five agents gathered from around the world to fight Skinner’s plot. Can they save humanity? And what is Skinner’s true purpose?”

We’ll keep you posted on any updates for this anticipated Toonami project.
