Kevin Smith Talks Making Masters Of The Universe Revelation

Masters of the Universe Revelation

Masters Of The Universe Revelation is a very unique animation project on various levels. Not the least of which is that the show is technically a continuation of the original 80s He-Man series, but with modern animation and storytelling. As well as being headed up by one of the biggest fans/directors out there via Kevin Smith. He promised a lot of things for this series and he delivered on them, even if fans weren’t exactly on board at times with his “bold strokes”.

Kevin Smith did an interview with Variety and in it he talked about what it was like getting the job, and the nervousness that he had about the job at first. For example, he expected Mattel (who owns the He-Man franchise) to basically tell him to do a “reimagining” of the He-Man franchise for the modern age. But that’s not what he was asked at all:

“[Biaselli’s] like, ‘I yearn to watch the show I thought I was watching in childhood. That’s what I’m looking for here, the same show, but people can die. Can you do that?’” Smith said. “And I was like, ‘That’s the only thing I can do.’”

After Part 1 came out, the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for the audience score was bombed with those who reacted poorly to the decisions that Kevin Smith made. And he had several reactions to that, including telling them to “grow up”. As well as saying:

“And also, because I know what a fan base reacts like when they don’t get the thing they grew up watching. You think I’m gonna be the fall guy for that? If I’m involved in a thing, it’s going to be true to what it is. It’s gonna be true to the franchise.”

Masters Of The Universe Revelation Part 1 is available now on Netflix, with Part 2 coming later.
